Mario Kart DS
Anyone here want to stop snaking?

Alright im sorry about this rant, but ever since I have had my wi-fi up and running in my house, I have been playing alot of Mario Kart DS. First I thought hey this would be fun, im not gonna win all the time but at least it will be fun and competitive, wrong. The thing that annoys me the most is snakers, first off its not a real skill, second of all it annoys me how every race the same person is snaking, and usally winning. But the last 10 races or so that I had, I have been able to beat the snakers. The only problem since they cheat to win, they cant cheat to loose! I mean I manage to play fairly and win, until the last race where the snaker is losing and then decides to leave the race leaving me alone. Right now because of the snakers out there I should be dead even with wins and loses. I will continue to play Mario Kart DS online, but I hope I get some real challenges like I di with some of my friends when we have DS meetings and such.

Who here snakes, and be honest.
Who here cant stand snaking?
Who here wants a real race?

Well I will put up my friend code tonight, that is the only time im free. So if anyone is up at about 11pm pst tonight, check live journal and lets play some honest Mario Kart.

I honestly don't see the problem with snaking.

It is a real skill, and it's not cheating. I've never been able to do it, but I don't get butthurt when I lose to someone who can. The drift-boost has been around since Mario Kart 64, and people have been snaking since its inception. My friends have been kicking my ass at Double Dash for months by doing it, and you know what I did? I started trying to learn how to do it. It's just another strategy, one that takes a lot of skill to be able to pull off. Asking to play MK without snaking is like asking to play Goldeneye without guns. Anybody who thinks snaking is cheating is just crying because they keep losing.

Agreed. I don't snake either, but I can accept the fact that it takes a lot of practice and hard work to pull off, and kudos to anybody who can do it. I try it a lot and end up being in an even worse place than before. :P It's very difficult to master.

It's a skill, it's not "cheating". Just like how using a blue shell right at the last moment to take out first place isn't cheating, or taking the shortcuts aren't cheating. It was designed in the game in the first place, and it's not like you have to do anything to unlock it (other than get pissed at yourself when you try it and fail), so how does that count as cheating? Anybody can do it if you try it enough (except probably me, ha).

Although I disagree on the snaking point, I do agree with the poster about the dropping out thing. That can get on anybody's nerves.

Personally, I don't think snaking is *that* bad. I'm not too crash hot at it, but I happen to basiclaly go at the same speed whether I snake or not. When I don't snake, I am able to cover the least amount of road as possible, but when swaying side to side in snaking, even if it's a bit, slows me down, even though the boost at the end makes up for it. Besides, it uses up more concentration, which I need to pay attention on where I'm going and stuff. Bit I do utilize the natural turns for a boost. Personally, I think snaking is only really usefull on those boring flat roads which I don't really play on anyway.

And we all know what to do with snakers. Shell 'em!

And yeah, snaking is a skill, I mean, try it yourself. Press those D pad buttons fast before you snake right off the road and kiss your boost goodbye :P

You know what annoys me. When people get my slip stream! Grrrr. That's when snaking is good, prevents people from doing that :P People dropping out annoys me too. Sometimes it can't be helped, I drop out all the time, since I use EB's connection, which seems to be quiet shit. I'm out there in front, and blam, goodbye connection. I feel even worse when I'm losing!

I'm not sure if it's the snaking that makes that game sucky, or if it's just a sucky game. But it definitely sucks.

Snaking bothers me too, but it's not necessarily cheating. Perhaps it's taking advantage of the game's design a bit, but it's a skill that requires a lot of practice, definitely.

People dropping out is what really pisses me off. Especially when they're losing. I have more respect for someone with a losing record because I know that's someone who doesn't cut out. People with a winning record are either really good (which is cool - more power to them) or just cut out anytime the chips are down.

Snaking, to me, is no different the using a warp zone in Super Mario Bros. or flying around w/ the flute in The Legend of Zelda. It's just a part of the game.

If you don't like it, that's fine. You don't have to. I just get tired of hearing people bitch and moan about losing to snakers.

"Honest" Mario Kart? I had to laugh, I'm sorry. Read below.

If I had a choice o what had to be modified in this game, it would probably be the item selections. As I go back to it again, seriously - how is it that the SNES version seemed like it was all around balanced? The items are dirtier, IMO. Maybe because I've been screwed more times by some lamer getting a good item at the end of a race while I was leading, yet couldn't do anything about it. XD

How does that apply? Snaking is not a lot of "regular" people race when they depend on it. But it does take skill to do, it's not a bug, it was put in there on purpose yadda yadda. I wonder what a game with all good snakers looks like?

Well I've been there, done that - ranted about snakers etc. - done it myself too. I'm not the best at it, and I don't really care for it as much anymore since I've been playing with a group of people that don't snake, but it's as close as they can get to it by multi mini-boosting around corners and such. Multi-boosting isn't cheating, is it? Aren't we meant to take corners in one slide turn? I don't. I use every opportunity to boost w/o "snaking" as much as I can.

And for clarification, I don't try snaking unless my opponent is good at it and it's not possible to keep up w/o it. I'm not going to sit back and give someone a win just because "I won't snake." They have to trample me first (which HAS happened). Although what's really interesting is when you're against a snaker and the game is lagging their character for some reason... that sucks.

I'll play you later tonight if I'm up, though (I'm in CST) so give me an IM at KawaiiChica34 even if my away message is up to see if I'm awake.

Asking to play MK without snaking is like asking to play Goldeneye without guns.

No it isn't. Take away the guns in Goldeneye and you have no game (the whole purpose of having a first-person shooter). Take away the miniturbos in MK and you'll still have solid gameplay, because you still have a variety of characters and go-karts to choose from. The first Mario Kart didn't have the miniturbos and isn't broken like the rest of the MK games, especially because it doesn't have the turbo exploit. I agree with Tenkaichi about the items, but they probably seemed cheaper because there weren't as many as there are now, and players had to use them the most creative ways possible (wtf happened to the poisonous mushrooms and running over shrunken players?).

I don't get annoyed by snakers anymore. People just have to figure out other strategies if they don't want to jump on the snake bandwagon. I pick Peach's and Daisy's signature karts, because they're good for items and drifting. I enter the turns tightly and pummel players with a lot of red/blue shells throughout the race. I have a fairly even win:loss ratio. Snakers usually concentrate more on snaking, so they don't pay enough attention to the items other players aquire. Players snaking on tracks with edges and falling off on accident is a hoot. :D Play with a friend and both of you choose the same track. If you're able to get the tracks that aren't snake-friendly (sky garden ftw), you'll have a better chance at pissing the snakers off than them pissing you off, hence the title of my reply. XD

Do not worry. In about 2 months me and 3 friends who have all owned MKDS since it came out are all going to be on wifi a LOT. I'll keep you updated if you can set up teams and stuff :)
We'd NEVER shut off or disconnect a game, we feel the same way as you do :)

How about winning a race without snaking, that takes more skill IMO. The rant was to express my feelings towards the subject, and not to flame anyone who snakes, I even asked to see who snakes just to see who does it. No biggie, just a mindless rant.
